You see, we Democrats have a very different measure of what constitutes progress in this country.

We measure progress by how many people can find a job that pays the mortgage; whether you can put a little extra money away at the end of each month so you can someday watch your child receive her college diploma. We measure progress in the 23m new jobs that were created when Bill Clinton was president - when the average American family saw its income go up $7,500 instead of down $2,000 like it has under George Bush.

우리는 얼마나 많은 사람들이 모기지를 갚을 수 있게 일자리를 찾았는지, 나중에 자식이 대학 졸업장을 받는 것을 볼 수 있게끔 매달 말 약간의 여유돈이라도 저축할 수 있는지, 이런 것으로 발전 정도를 측정합니다. 우리는 평균 가계소득을 2,000달러 감소시킨 부시 대신 7,000달러를 증가시킨 클린턴 대통령 당시 만들어진 2,300만 개의 일자리에서 발전을 평가합니다.

We measure the strength of our economy not by the number of billionaires we have or the profits of the Fortune 500, but by whether someone with a good idea can take a risk and start a new business, or whether the waitress who lives on tips can take a day off to look after a sick kid without losing her job - an economy that honors the dignity of work.

우리는 억만장자의 숫자나 500대 기업의 이익을 가지고 경제의 강함을 측정하지 않고, 좋은 아이디어를 가진 사람이 위험부담을 지고 새로운 사업을 시작할 수 있는지, 또는 팁으로 생활하는 식당 종업원이 일자리를 잃을 걱정 없이 하루 출근하지 않고 아픈 애를 돌볼 수 있는지 하는 것으로 경제를 측정합니다. 일하는 것의 존엄을 존중하는 경제를 말입니다.

The fundamentals we use to measure economic strength are whether we are living up to that fundamental promise that has made this country great - a promise that is the only reason I am standing here tonight.

우리가 경제적인 힘을 재는 근본적인 것들은 이 나라를 위대하게 만든 근본적인 약속을 지키며 살아가느냐 하는 것입니다. 저로 하여금 오늘 밤 이 자리에 서게 한 유일한 이유인 그 약속 말입니다.
